Roots and Shoots

In the first meeting the Liberty Wildlife education group taught about great horned owls, kestrels, Harris's hawks and gopher snakes, bringing representatives of each species to the North Mountain Preserve meeting site. For the second meeting, everyone went to Liberty Wildlife for a tour of the facility, where volunteers gave a tour and invited the kids to sit in on an eagle feeding. The comments below reflect the impact of seeing the animals up close. The next Roots and Shoots meeting will be August 4 at the North Mountain Preserve.
Please contact group leader Barbie Baugh if you would like to join.

This wonderful experience has added greatly to my love and concern for desert birds. Near the end of the tour I was able to stand about 10 feet away from our country's symbol, the bald eagle. After the bald eagle, we saw a golden eagle. B-e-a-utiful bird! We got to see it eat a dead chicken, also about 10 feet away. My favorite bird that was at Liberty was the screech owl. They are only about 9 inches tall! I loved my visit and I hope that I would be able to visit there again! Maybe volunteer when I'm older too.

Going to Liberty was one of the coolest experiences of my life. Seeing all of these birds and just watching them was amazing. The bald eagle eating the mouse was so cool, it showed me how smart these birds really are. I would definitely go back to Liberty again and again.

I was so excited to see all those interesting birds. My favorite was the little tiny screech owl. It was sooo cute! I'm more excited to go back and see more of the animals. I also liked the llamas. They were really cool! We didn't get to actually look at them and learn about them, but I got to see them.
