Volunteer Opportunity: Biological Technician

Introduction:

Liberty Wildlife is a non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife conservation through wildlife rehabilitation, environmental education, and the resolution of wildlife/human conflicts. We have a 20-year

history working in Arizona and are based in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Research and Conservation Division of Liberty Wildlife conducts research projects and wildlife management projects, and provides a full range of environmental capabilities for agencies and companies. Projects can vary widely but primarily are bird-centered, with a current emphasis on raptors and utility provider issues.

Position Description:

A volunteer Biological Technician is needed to perform a range of job duties related to active research and conservation programs. Projects may vary in hours and duration. Duties may include a full range of responsibilities related to field work, data management, interacting with cooperators, and technical writing. Computer tasks such as data entry and database management are a significant aspect of the position.

The Technician will work without direct supervision at times and will have to use personal organization/motivation skills. Representing Liberty Wildlife in a variety of contexts and with a wide range of cooperators and other people is an important part of the position.

We are seeking career-track individuals interested in building a profession in wildlife management or in research. This position has the potential to develop into a leadership position managing projects. Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Science/Ecology, Biology, Evolutionary Ecology, or a related discipline. Prior experience in field research or agency work, either as an employee or volunteer, is ideal. Field skills such as map reading, GPS use, and observational techniques are important.

Experience or formal training in Excel, Access, Endnote or Pagemaker is a plus, as well as good technical writing skills. Individuals must be in general good physical condition and be capable of rigorous hiking and long field days. Tolerance of heat and arid desert conditions is necessary. Full-color vision is required.

A good record of building and maintaining good relationships within the workplace, with outside professionals, and with the general public is absolutely necessary. Related professional skills (e.g., personal appearance, attire, and conduct) are a requirement.
