Unintended Visitor

As successful as raptors are, and as feared as they are by many species, it’s important to remember that there is an element of fragility behind their speed and power. Golden eagles have been known to take prey as large as deer on rare occasions, but the typical golden eagle only weighs around twelve or fourteen pounds, a huge sum for a bird of prey but decidedly lacking when compared to other predators that kill deer. Their light weight is what makes flight practical, but it also means that they have to be careful never to drop their guard or to otherwise leave themselves vulnerable.

The tipping point has arrived and all of us Sonoran desert inhabitants are sliding inevitably into the summer season. Humans adapt by moving their activities indoors or following a more crepuscular schedule. We don hats, cover our tender skin and increase our water intake. Back in the days before air conditioning, most folks left for the high country in May.
