Unintended Visitor

For most of the U.S. February is a winter month, but here in the Sonoran Desert, certain species of native plants, insects, birds and mammals are already proclaiming the arrival of spring. Early bloomers such as sweet acacia, velvet mesquite and creosote advertise their nectar with brilliant yellow blooms, and pollinating insects come flying.

Arizona has thirteen owl species that call it home. Two of them are very close cousins of one another – so close, in fact, that it would take an expert birder to even begin to tell them apart. And it wasn’t too long ago that they were all considered to be the same as a third family member. But now, screech owls are divided into three separate species: Western screech owls, Easternscreech owls, and the colorfully named Whiskered screech owl, each distinguished from the other by its distinctive call, along with some subtle color variations.
