Unintended Visitor

Arizona is home to all manner of landscapes and any number of simply stunning species. While Liberty Wildlife volunteers exist first and foremost to aid injured wildlife, we are nonetheless privileged to see some of the most beautiful animals in the world in an up-close, intimate setting. The one landscape you will not find here, however, is an ocean one; yet during the summer, we sometimes treat, of all things, pelicans. Lots of them. Why are they here, in Arizona, and how are they getting hurt in such numbers that we sometimes have a dozen or more on site at once?

When Desert Tortoise Journeys

While other desert critters soar, slither, skulk or hippity-hop, the desert tortoise laboriously pulls his bulky shell up and down unyielding hillsides. His leathery and elephantine legs seem attached at wrong angles for ambulatory activities, surely better suited to digging. Desert tortoises live out most of their years in burrows, emerging only to feed, to soak up sunshine and to breed or fight, depending on the sex of the other tortoises they encounter.

An Environmentally Friendly Garden

Many Arizona households engage in some level of gardening or lawn care every year. Some do it for beautiful flowers, lush grass, or fresh fruits and vegetables; some for the peace and quiet or the connection to nature. Most home gardeners already see evidence of global warming in their own backyards with droughts, floods, pests, and weeds which can be challenging. You can do more than merely adapt to these new conditions; you can make climate-friendly choices in your garden that do not add to the problem.
