We All Belong in the School of Sustainability

E. O. Wilson's theory of biophilia includes the idea that humans identify a fairly uniform vision of the most beautiful natural scene; that of a meadow encircled by trees, where clear water bubbles in a brook. Wilson posits our positive reaction to this landscape is hard wired in our brains, because such a setting provides the necessities of human survival.

A tale of two eagles

The United States is home to falcons and hawks of all shapes and sizes. Yet only two eagles live here, the Bald and the Golden. One we recognize instantly: the name is practically synonymous with everything "American." The other engenders a feeling of awe when we see it, but it's not as well known, at least in this country. We're far less likely to see an eagle in our daily lives than we are a hawk, falcon, or even an owl, and because of that, we might not know as much about them as we think.

The EPA estimates that the bulk of our garbage is made up of items that can be recycled or composted - 40% of it is paper, 17% is yard waste, 8% is plastics, and 7% is food waste. So just how long do items in our trash last?
