Morning storms gave way to a beautiful evening, and the 14th annual Wishes for Wildlife ruled our night. As always, the path leading to the event was lined with magnificent wildlife ambassadors and their handlers. It isn’t possible to walk by without noticing or feeling the presence of a great horned owl, a bald eagle, a ferruginous hawk, and others speaking their message of the benefits and beauty of our native wildlife.

On a Friday afternoon in April, Liberty Wildlife received a call from Jamey Driscoll, an eagle biologist at Arizona Game and Fish. Jamey had been contacted by Curtis McCasland, refuge manager at Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge. A family of Harris’ hawks was attacking newborn Sonoran pronghorns in a captive rearing pen on the refuge. US Fish and Wildlife Services had already given the go-ahead for the hawks to be shot. But the managers of the refuge hoped to find another way to save the endangered fawns.

 With the exciting news this week about the hatching of the first condor baby in the Baja, Mexico, recovery effort, Nature News is featuring a delightful children’s book, Condor’s Egg, by Jonathan London. The book is wonderfully illustrated by James Chaffee and includes an Afterword by Robert Mesta, who was the Condor Recovery Program Coordinator at the writing of this book.
